Water sees. Gives us its visions. We fall in. It cleans and envelops and abuses us. We lose ourselves to water’s ambiguous edges. “To contemplate water is to slip away, dissolve, and die,” declares Bachelard. Today, Mercury stations direct in Cancer—the zodiac’s cardinal water sign. It’s been wonderful working with clients on their projects—-revising, reworking, redoing during these reflective weeks. Creative risks. Strange synchronicities. As Mercury’s been retrograding through a water sign, I’ve been rereading Bachelard’s Water and Dreams. Mercury Rx is a death-re-birth situation and Bachelard declares watery deaths more dream-like than earthy deaths because, as he says, “the pain of water is infinite.” All July: the infinite pain of water! For Bachelard, language’s flow evokes water—kickstarting our material imaginations and endless liquid images. Violent water, placid water, childhood water, maternal water, blood, milk, reflective water, water. “The true eye of the earth is water,” he writes.
Below, more on this melancholic element, Mercury stationing direct, and four creative prompts for Mercury’s dramatic direction shift.
